Concepción has a unique feature: the town layout does not follow a geometric grid (as most colonial towns do) but instead has several streets radiating from the park toward different cardinal points. This is because the town developed urbanistically from the old bridle paths that led to the surrounding rural areas.
Construction of the park began in 1859 and it was inaugurated in 1907.
At the center of the plaza stands the statue of General José María Córdova, donated by the Republic of Ecuador during the presidency of General Eloy Alfaro in 1899, to commemorate the centenary of Córdova’s birth (posthumously inaugurated in 1907).
A commemorative plaque still remains as a symbol of the friendship between Colombia and Ecuador. At the front, there is a Colombian coat of arms and other side plaques honoring the hero. In 1981, the park was awarded the "Gold Star of Antioquia" as the most representative park of Eastern Antioquia.
